Child Safety and Window Treatments

Everyone knows that toddlers are naturally curious and drawn to explore. Which can often lead them to hazards including basic household items, windows, and window treatments. Hunter Douglas and Shutter Guy here in Charleston are committed to child safety, so we carry the latest in child-safe window treatments and operating systems.

Window Treatment Options

For several decades, the window treatment industry has been focused on reducing the threat of injury to children posed by looped window treatments. For the safety of any children in your home, convert to newer window treatments. One of our most popular products with a focus on child safety is our Vignette® Modern Roman Shades. Constructed without rear cords, these stylish and versatile window shades offer safe operation and an aesthetically pleasing design.

Operating Systems Options

From cordless manual and motorized operating systems to retractable lift cords, cord tensioners and wand controls, we offer a wide array of innovative operating system options for enhanced child and pet safety. Choose from the new cordless LiteRise®, the retractable UltraGlide® system, or—for the best in convenience, security, and safety—the motorized PowerView® option.

At-Home Steps to Take

Replace all window treatments with cords, including window blinds, corded shades, and corded draperies manufactured before 2001 or retrofit the old treatments with kits available at the site listed below. If you still have corded treatments, be aware of the window coverings in children’s bedrooms and play areas. Even with safe window coverings, move all beds, cribs, and toys away from windows. Keep tassel pull cords short, and make sure continuous-loop cords are permanently anchored to the floor or wall. Ensure that cord stops are properly installed and adjusted to limit movement of inner lift cords. When horizontal blinds or shades are lowered, ensure that cords are locked in position. Use safety features such as cord cleats and tensioning devices to improve the safety of your window treatments.
