Home Improvement: Remodel Or Move?

A recent report by the South Carolina Realtors in March of 2015 reports that inventory is expected to rise and homes sales are to increase. New listings throughout the state were up around 5 percent to 8,772. Pending sales increased 13.5 percent to 5,437 and inventory shrank 5 percent to 39,320 units. Prices moved higher as the median sales price was up 5.6 percent to $160,000. Days on market decreased 6.5 percent to 115 days while months supply of inventory was down 13.6 percent to seven months, the 12th consecutive month of year-over-year declines. All this info leaves a lot of Charleston area homeowners asking, “Should I remodel or move?”

This can be a tough decision. If you love the area and your neighborhood, then a little home remodeling might just give you the house of your dreams without the hassle and expense of a move. Remodeling where the water is — kitchens and bathrooms — not only increases the value of your home, but can create a more comfortable living environment.

Having a well thought out plan in mind before you jump in to any remodeling project will ensure you end up with your desired results and a home that you can live in for many more years to come. If you’re not sure where to start, consider these smaller remodeling projects:

  • New window treatments to change the way light is filtered in your rooms.
  • Wallpaper or paint to create brighter rooms and a fresh new look.
  • Re-upholstered furniture to create a new color scheme or theme in your home.

Choosing Your Vendors

Unless you’re doing all your remodeling yourself, you’ll need to select vendors and contractors. Look for partners who will listen to you and will make your project a top priority. Although remodeling can be costly, it’s not a time to make selections on price. Consider product quality and manufacturer reputation for long-lasting window treatments, flooring, and wall coverings. Before you make any product decisions, make sure you understand warranty and lifetime repair specifics.
