Narrowing Your Window Treatment Selections

When it comes to window treatments, there are so many options, it can be daunting. Everything from style to fabric to function to color is part of the selection, and narrowing it all down can be tough. At Shutter Guy serving Charleston, our trained consultants will be happy help you find a beautiful and functioning window treatment. In the meantime, here are some ways to narrow down the selection before you come in. Doing your homework before you meet with a window treatment specialist will save you time and allow them to better serve you.

  • Decide whether you need horizontal or vertical treatments. Vertical products can go to one side or to both sides of the window. For many people who have pets and little kids, vertical is not a good option. Horizontal products can be raised, stacked on the window, or hidden under a valance. If you prefer a horizontal blind or shade for sliding glass door, two window treatments could be mounted on one track. This allows the ability to have one shade down and the other up for easy access.
  • Determine the focal point of the room. Your eye will be drawn to an area of color in the room. If your window treatment has color, that will become the focal point. On the other hand, if you have lots of accessories, lamps, color, and good stuff going on in the room, receding the treatment by using neutral colors and soft textures would be the way to go.
  • Think about the function of the treatment. Should it diffuse or deflect light? If you’re sensitive to light, this is a huge factor. Diffused light is a soft light with neither the intensity nor the glare of direct light. A few products that offer diffused light are Duette® Honeycomb Shades, Silhouette® Window Shadings, Luminette® Privacy Sheers, pleated and roller shades. Deflected light is harsh and can be hard on the aging eye. It can be softened by the use of draperies. A few products that offer deflected light are Provenance® Woven Wood Blinds, shutters, and both vertical and horizontal blinds.

Having a handle on these ideas should help you narrow down the selection of window treatments. Remember, the process for shopping for window treatments should be fun. And in the end, you should be able to find the perfect window treatment that not only finish your room beautifully but offer the functionality you need as well.
