Tidying or Updating Your Home?

If you’ve hit the weekend, chances are, you’re thinking about tackling something in your home, perhaps updating a room or an aspect of your house. Sometimes, new window treatments are just what you need to give a room a quick new vibe. If that’s what you need, speak to a trained specialist at Shutter Guy here in Charleston. We’ll help you figure out the right solution. But sometimes, all your window treatments need is a good cleaning to get them spruced up. Read on to get some tips on how to tackle that with yours!

Things to Remember

With window treatments, many of us put cleaning on the back burner. After all, it’s not something we do on a regular basis, and we don’t want to make a mistake and ruin them! Some treatments are perfect for those who want to do it themselves; others, though, need a professional.

Tips for Cleaning Blinds and Shades

To maintain a like-new appearance for most blinds and shades, regular light dusting is all you need. If you need a deeper cleaning, gently vacuum the fabric with a clean brush attachment. For cellular shades, use compressed air to clean them. If you have a stain, you can spot-clean most shades and blinds using a soft cloth dampened with lukewarm water and, if needed, a very mild detergent. Just be sure that you never rub the fabric because that could crease or damage it.

Products You Can Clean Yourself

Most faux wood and aluminum blinds can be submerged in lukewarm water in your bathtub or sink. Use a gentle detergent and your fingers to gently move the liquid over the slats. Close the blind to rinse and tilt it to drain the water off. Reinstall the blind while it’s damp, being sure to lower it so it can dry completely. You should never submerge the headrail of your window treatment because most of the lifting mechanisms housed there are not designed to get wet.

Treatments That Need Professional Cleaning

If your treatment is made with delicate or fine fabrics, consult the professionals. They might recommend ultrasonic cleaning or injection/extraction cleaning, depending on the type of shade. Typically they will come to your home, so you won’t need to remove your window treatments. To find appropriate cleaning services in your area, reach out to a Shutter Guy representative or call Hunter Douglas at 1-888-501-8364. Remember, each cleaning facility is independently owned, so it’s up to you to find the best one for your treatments.
